Killer Voices Debut #6 -- Christmas in Hiding

It's release day for another one of my Killer Voices sisters! Cate Nolan has waited a loooong time to see her book in print -- yes, she sold at the same time those of us published earlier this year did! -- so it's very exciting to be able to finally celebrate this release with her.

Christmas in Hiding is Cate's debut -- come on over to the Harlequin debut thread and read more about her and what inspired this book!

Plus, a bonus is that it's a Christmas-themed book which makes it a perfect gift option for those bibliophiles on your list. Oooh, yeah!

Books, Books, Books

You know what’s dangerous? Setting your bibliophile spouse loose inside a book outlet warehouse for three hours on a Saturday afternoon… with or without a budget, it’s a dangerous thing!

There’s a fantastic discount book warehouse about an hour away from where I live, and I kid you not—they have large shopping carts for customers to wheel up and down the aisles. And fill. Fill!!!

Needless to say, the three hours passed very quickly and although I did end up with a cart full of books, I did have to put most of them back. But I ended up with a few titles in the end, and it was a great, relaxing way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Tell me about a time when you spent hours in a bookstore and walked away with… well, fewer books than you wanted to!

The Shores of Argentia

If you read FATAL FREEZE earlier this year, you know that the ferry on which Lexie and Shaun were trapped was headed to Argentia, Newfoundland. But have you ever seen what the shoreline of Argentia would look like once the ferry returned to its course?

Marine Atlantic retweeted a passenger’s photo of a ferry’s approach to Argentia, and I thought I’d share it with you here:

Rather pretty, isn’t it? J

Crafting Fun

Do you like crafting? This past year, I discovered a new (for me) type of crafting called "felting.” The basic idea is that you take pieces of wool roving, then poke them repeatedly with a needle until the fibres intertwine enough to firm up… and then add more wool as needed while you continue poking to give shape to the object.

Recently, I finished my second felting project. Right now I’m using felting kits, but it’s more typical to use patterns out of books and buy the colors of wool that you need separately.

The needles used are very sharp, so there are also little plastic caps to wear on your fingertips—like silicone thimbles!—to avoid stabbing yourself by accident. Or before you know better… not that I have any experience with that… o_O

Have you tried any new crafts this year? Or do you have a specific type of craft you like to relax with?

It’s Official! New Book Coming in 2016!

Exciting news! There will be another Michelle Karl book hitting store shelves in May 2016, and the title is… UNKNOWN ENEMY. *dun dun duuuun*

I’m really excited to share this story with you all, because it features a number of aspects that are really close to my heart. But I’m not going to give it all away right now – rather, in the months ahead I’m hoping to post some teaser information about the characters and plot.

Stay tuned, but for now… yay! New book!

A Little Bit of Light

Things have been a little tense lately online for evangelical publishers, Christian writers, and romance readers. If you’re not aware of the controversy, I’m not going to summarize it here—but if you are familiar with it, you could probably use a smile or two right now.

So, without further ado, here’s a little monkey getting his fur brushed:

And a silly baby goat jumping over (and on!) other baby goats:

And just for good measure, a picture of my cat:

Because you can never have too many cat pictures!

Please don’t take this the wrong way—I’m not trying to make light of the situation happening online right now in regards to a certain book. However, it’s important to keep things in perspective and give ourselves a moment or two to laugh and smile, even during serious times.

Feel free to share your own link to your favorite "little bit of light” below!

RWA Recap -- Part #1

As I write this, this time last week, I was finishing up lunch with my fantastic editor Emily Rodmell and two fellow Love Inspired authors, Maggie K. Black and Debby Giusti, at a little New York restaurant called Nino's. I'd been so incredibly anxious about it, but the meal was delightful and the conversation easy.

But what was I doing in New York? I was attending the RWA annual conference for the very first time, held this year in NYC (the location changes each year). It was one of those things that I felt I should do, especially as a new author, and Maggie convinced me to come and share a room with her.

It's daunting to travel to NYC on your own... but I made it on the Air Train and then the subway to 42nd street, emerging to a ridiculously busy street where I had to drag my suitcases around until I figured out where the hotel was (right inside Times Square)!

While I didn't take a lot of my own photos during the conference (I'm terrible at remembering to do that), I'll try to share some images from my fellow writers and credit where possible in these next few posts.

The very first session after arrival was a Harlequin Debut Authors Meet & Greet, where I had the opportunity to meet many of the important people at Harlequin, from marketing to editing to the business side of things. It was nice being able to put faces to familiar names, though admittedly the interaction was quite daunting for an introvert who'd just barely held it together while traveling on the NYC subway for the first time. Hah!

I did meet up with several fellow Killer Voices debut authors at this time, Dana & Cate, so it was nice to have some familiar faces to turn occasionally! After that it was off to the Goody Room, unpacking, and getting oriented before the literacy signing.

Imagine a giant ballroom full of long aisles with authors sitting behind the tables and the aisles jam-packed with readers (mostly other authors!). It was a great opportunity to meet new & favorite authors... and to buy signed books to raise funds for literacy, of course! I met (and bought books from):

  • Ellie Macdonald, whose table was next to Dana R. Lynn's, and who hand-sold her book to me in such a convincing way that I couldn't say no! I wish I could recall how she described it (something meets... something else), but it was a great pitch and Ellie was delightful.
  • Sandra Orchard, who is a fellow LIS writer and Ontario resident! I hadn't met her yet and thought it was about time, since we live close to each other and share a mutual friend in Maggie K. Black.
  • Emily McKay, whose YA series I was utterly shocked & delighted to find there as I'd been intending to buy the third (and most recent) book later this month. I was glad to be able to tell her how much I and my sister have enjoyed her series.
  • Sonali Dev, whose "A Bollywood Affair" I have heard nothing but fantastic things about... and admittedly, while I already have a copy of the book on my Kindle app, I wanted a hard copy to enjoy. We got to swap stories about our earrings, which was fun!
I went to bed nice and early on Wednesday night so I'd be ready for the next day, which was full of workshops and other opportunities to meet Love Inspired authors and editors. We took a big group photo after a Love Inspired Meet & Greet... look at all those smiling faces!

I'm way at the back there on the right, underneath the tip of what looks like an upside-down white lipstick tube!

The day was exhausting but great, as I got to meet many, many other Love Inspired authors and connect them with the books I'd read. Such lovely people, and very giving.

In the next post, I'll talk a little bit about the Harlequin party on Friday night -- and talk a little bit more about what it's like attending a massive conference like this as an introvert who struggles with anxiety. If you, like me, have trouble being around people constantly and need to get away to recharge sometimes... don't worry! You're not alone. :)

Covert Justice -- Killer Voice Debut #5

Here we go again! It's time for the fifth Killer Voices debut author to see all her hard work come to fruition in a real, tangible book! Lynn Huggins Blackburn's Covert Justice is on store shelves this month.

I've had the joy of getting to know Lynn a little bit over the past few months through social media and our Killer Voices crew, and here are three things I know about her:

1) She loves CrossFit!
2) She recently(?) participated in a Whole30 challenge.
3) She has an adorable family that she's wholly dedicated to.

And a fourth thing? Christ's love really does shine through her interactions online, and I can have no doubt she lives out her love for Jesus on a daily basis.

Happy debut month, Lynn!

You can check out the listing for Covert Justice here, and it should be at your local retailers right now!

Into Thin Air -- Another Killer Voice Published!

As the dust settles from the April debut of three Killer Voices authors, let's not forget that there are three other fantastic ladies whose debut novels are coming out this year too!

Mary-Ellen Porter is the fourth Killer Voice to see her debut novel with Love Inspired Suspense, and it's called Into Thin Air. I can't wait to read it, because this book features search & rescue dog teams, which Mary-Ellen has plenty of personal experience with. Plus, there's a social justice angle to the plot, which anyone who has read Fatal Freeze will be familiar with.

Into Thin Air should be on bookshelves now. Check it out on the Amazon page and then head to your local retailer for a copy!

The Ultimate Icebreaker at Team Love on the Run

I'm guest posting today over on Team Love on the Run's Friday Feature -- and there's a giveaway!

Head over to check it out, and stick around for more posts and fun stuff. These ladies are fellow romantic suspense writers, so their site is a great place to browse around if you love the genre and are looking for more. lol
